Climate Crisis: Competing Environment And Social Goals Are Hurting Response To Global Warming

A report from Leeds University says that no country has been able to adequately mesh climate change targets with social welfare goals since the Paris Climate agreement was signed.

The link between high emissions and a good standard of population social care appears to suggest that the two are connected in a way which means they cannot be mutually achieved. Developed countries with high social care and equality are overshooting their emissions targets; whilst developing countries with little industrialisation and low emissions are missing social goals to the detriment of the people living there.

Without outside support, those developing nations will never be able to break the link between the two; however there's little reason why developed countries cannot. A reduction in spending on fossil fuels, change of transportation systems and diet can all reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions without affecting the wellbeing of populations.

That has to be the priority and short-term target as we head towards 2030 and the next big indicator of success on climate change.
