Zoom Exposes Mac Users Once More

Zoom may be riding the wave of Coronavirus driven remote working and socialising, but its continued inability to maintain security or privacy within the app is giving rise to serious concerns in the security community - especially given the way that politicians around the world are known to be using the app, making it a high profile target for anyone keen to uncover where political thinking is headed around the world.

The latest news of two new previously unknown vulnerabilities discovered by Jamf security researcher Patrick Wardle, is therefore troubling. Both relate to the Mac platform and leverage poor behaviour on the part of Zoom's installer, which allows a hacker to gain elevated system access; or the input handling, which allows a hacker to gain access to the Macs webcam and microphone and eavesdrop on a user.

With a pretty much consistent record to security lapses and privacy errors being played out on an ongoing basis Wardle's advice seems pretty sensible:

"if you care about your security and privacy, perhaps stop using Zoom."
