Fiat To Cut Range To Two Cars, Focus On Electric Power Going Forward

Fiat has announced new plans for its range of cars, with the Punto and Tipo not getting replaced, leaving the company dependent upon two models for its future. The 500 and Panda, both of which will compete in the City Car sector.

Fiat intends to make the 500 its premium model, using the current cars popularity and global trendiness to support higher prices, whilst the Panda will become its volume seller in the sector, maintaining its position as the value proposition amongst small cars.

Electric motors will feature heavily here too. Both cars will have an electric version which will hopefully be profitable, rather than a loss maker, like the current 500e.

The important thing here is that Fiat is very good at the 'stack em high, sell em cheap' end of the automotive market and if it can deliver an electric city car which follows this philosophy, it could reap the benefits in significant sales, whilst forcing other manufacturers to follow suit.

Crucially, for a city car, range isn't a major issue and as long as Fiat can offer something around the 100 mile mark the Panda and 500 EVs could turn out to be very desirable indeed.
