EU Overwhelmingly Votes To Standardise Phone Charging Ports
In a major reversal for Apple, the EU Parliament has voted to create a common charger standard for mobile phones. Whilst it hasn't been stated what this will be it seems hard to see past USB-C, an open standard which is already popular on laptops and smartphones. A decision on this standard will be made within six months.
Which leaves Apple in a Lightning port shaped pickle. Inevitably it is going to have to lock step with the rest of the industry if it wants to keep selling phones in the EU - and given the size of the market it certainly does. But does it achieve this by building an EU only iPhone (and probably an iPad as well given that tablets warrant consideration in the EU memorandum) or does it capitulate and replace Lightning on everything, everywhere?
Is a port-free, wireless charging only iPhone Apple's only real way out of this problem? Whatever else happens now, it seems clear that Apple has to plan for a change in the very near future, whether it likes it or not.
