Where Is Apple’s Lightweight Portable

Way back in the mists of time Apple introduced the PowerBook Duo, a thin and light laptop which made everything else available at the time feel less than portable. To put that into context, the original 210 model with its 9" grayscale display topped the scales at nearly 2kg and was 36mm thick. Apple's biggest, heaviest offering today is about the same weight and thickness. In the intervening years Apple had offered a whole host of ultraportable Macs which left the PC competition for for dead.

Unfortunately that is no longer the case. Apples lightest offering is the MacBook Air, and it is heavier and thicker than a whole host of PC ultraportables, even with the new M1 processor. Even the iPad Pro paired with its keyboard makes some PC laptops look svelte.

Surely the next round of M1 Mac introductions will include a true replacement for the MacBook 12 - the last truly ultraportable Mac Apple has offered? After all we know the M1's low power requirements and impressive thermal efficiency make this sort of machine easily doable.

The iPad is a good portable, but it is no Mac replacement. As such, a lightweight Mac is in high demand from Mac fans. Unless the iPhone Mini episode has put Apple off delivering small devices it must be peeping a new lightweight Mac even now.
