Mercedes To Enter Formula E, Jeopardises DTM's Future

Mercedes will leave the German Touring Car Championship at the end of 2018 to enter Formula E, joining the electric championship in season six. The announcement appears to have blindsided the DTM competition, leaving serious questions over the future of the competition.

Currently Mercedes competes against BMW and Audi in DTM, however with both BMW and Mercedes set to join Audi in Formula E there have to be questions about the continued commitment of all three to Touring Cars.

With the only other regular DTM competitors - Opel and Alfa Romeo - long gone, the prospect of a two make championship doesn't make for the appealing speedfest of years gone by.

Of course it's also a big vote of confidence in Formula E and with new rules and new cars coming the future prospects of the series are looking pretty... electric.
