President of Sony, Kazua Hirai has confirmed what we suspected all along: its Xperia smartphone business is no longer in the business of selling phones. Speaking to AFR Weekend magazine in Australia, Hirai suggested his goals for Sony's smartphone division is not to make a loss. Market share is of little importance.

There are some side benefits - servicing a need to provide Sony fans with a smartphone and positioning itself for any post-smartphone developments in the future.
