Sony Confirms Limited Ambitions For Xperia Smartphones

President of Sony, Kazua Hirai has confirmed what we suspected all along: its Xperia smartphone business is no longer in the business of selling phones. Speaking to AFR Weekend magazine in Australia, Hirai suggested his goals for Sony's smartphone division is not to make a loss. Market share is of little importance.

That's in line with what we've seen with recent premium Xperias. Devices whose primary purpose is to showcase Sony's expanding portfolio of smartphone components to other smartphone manufacturers.

There are some side benefits - servicing a need to provide Sony fans with a smartphone and positioning itself for any post-smartphone developments in the future.
