Spotify took to Twitter this morning to announce that it had hit 50m subscribers, with another 50m free users bringing the current user base to 100m. That marks impressive growth of 20m users in the last twelve months.
Spotify is not only the biggest streaming service, but it's growing faster than the competition. Apple added 20m users in the eighteen months from launch to the end of 2016. We may not hear subscriber numbers from Apple for a while. At that rate it won't hit 30m until September. If growth has accelerated to match that of Spotify the next milestone should come up in June.
Spotify is doing a fantastic job of driving subscriber numbers upwards. Whether its actually able to make this a profitable business is still in question though.
