Apple's Quality Failings Don't Seem To Put Customers Off
Running back over the last few years we have the MacBook Pro/Air logic board problems, iPhone 4 antenna problem, the iPhone 5 battery problem and paint chipping ; and now claims that the iPhone 6 Plus warps when carried in a pocket.
That's a pretty poor effort for a company that prides itself on the quality of its hardware, but the software list makes even more gloomy reading.
In iOS 6 we had the Google Maps disaster, In iOS 7 battery, Wifi, Activation lock and Touch ID bugs; in iOS 8 we lost Healthkit and then the iOS8.01 upgrade designed to fix it turned iPhones into iPods. In OS X we've had the Snow Leopard Wifi issues, Mavericks blew Gmail compatibility due to IMAP changes, had problems with Displaylink support, and of course shipped with a Shellshock vulnerable BASH.
And Apple's biggest failure right now remains iCloud. It's proven to be complex, unreliable and inadequately protected to prevent leaks of the naked celebrity nature.
So with all of these mis-steps you'd expect that Apple would be having a hard time shipping out its devices right? Wrong. The loyalty of Apple's customers survives even the sort of issues which render their devices unusable, unconnected or even just bendy.
Their are plenty of other companies that would sell their grandmothers to have even half of the loyalty that Apple garners from its customers. In fact the only companies really having any success are Samsung, who as I have pointed out before, have built their reputation on being the anti-Apple. Sometimes cleverly, sometimes rather brashly, but always successfully. Apple fans have an almost pathological hatred of Samsung because of its success in this area.
For Apple though, it doesn't matter what problems it gives its fans and how much its competitors try to score points off its failings, its reputation remains untouchable. And that's Apple's not so secret sauce.
