Hotmail Gets Exchange Activesync... Finally

After years of begging and pleading Microsoft's Hotmail users have finally been given over the air push access to email, calendars and contacts via Exchange Activesync. Shame that most of the people that might have benefited have jumped ship to Google or Apple and will never reap the benefits of the new functionality.

Windows Mobile users did have the option for using Windows Live to sync their mail and contacts to their phones as long ago as Windows Mobile 5, which just goes to show how long it took Microsoft to understand that mobile sales are driven be an ecosystem and not just hardware.

Will Windows Phone 7 benefit through the change? I'm not so sure, after all Microsoft have thrown so much functionality out of the launch release that users who have switched to Android or iPhone are unlikely to see a reasonable benefit to switching back. Hotmail support isn't going to be a big factor in that decision now most people are using Gmail for their mail service...
