Android Passes iPhone, Closes In On Blackberry

Analysts Canalys have released their Q2 figures for smartphone shipments and it makes for very good reading for Google. Year on year Android shipments increased by nearly 900%, passing the iPhone and bringing Android close to RIM for second place in the smartphone segment.

Apple's fears over the performance of its erstwhile ally's platform have been realised even though the iPhone's figures are likely lower than they could have been if Apple had been able to meet the demand for the new iPhone 4 and ship it worldwide.

Q3's figures promise to be even better as Google's partners start to ship new devices with Froyo installed...
